Welcome to Courtney Trouble’s 2014 State of the Fist, where Courtney (co-founder of Fisting Day!) reports of the past year’s wins and losses in the world of queer fisting porn and censorship!

fistingday2014wow, i can’t believe it’s already time to have a check in about fisting. it’s been a busy year for me and my company, but fisting still is and probably always will be a challenging subject when it comes to my career in the adult industry. and i have to say, i’ve made some sacrifices. but i’ve also done a bit of deeper research. and, i’ve found some awesome loopholes to getting fisting in the mainstream! i’ve also made an avalanche of fisting porn in the past year, from both in front of and behind the camera.

so, the sacrifices. i had a heart to heart with a friend in the industry (the LA industry, that is) who simply told me, “edit it out, or else it can’t get put on dvd, and it can’t get any nominations if it’s not on dvd – and is it really worth having all those people NOT see the amazing work you’re making?” and when i thought about that, i realized that DVDs are now only one way that my films get seen, and maybe – just maybe – making distribution-safe films for DVD release wasn’t that bad of a choice to make, when the chances of people seeing the full fisty version, is more likely anyhow (especially if you buy the film from my store, where you get a digital version of the film for free when you buy a DVD. So these days, I make the legally-safe version, as release the director’s cut a little early so my “real fans” get the “real version.”

In the meantime, I’ve been talking to some other contacts within the industry, and trying to get to the bottom of where this fisting fear is coming from. Most of the people I do business with wouldn’t really care about selling fisting content, to be honest. But the few of them I spoke with mentioned one, very large, very mainstream distribution company that refuses to sell it – and with that company being many people’s largest client – it’s really hard to pass up the ability to sell to them. In 2015, I hope to meet with someone from this company and show them some of this important work we’ve been doing to shed some positive light on fisting porn, and hopefully we can find a way to bring sex-posi fisting fun back into the world of film. It’s interesting to discover that much of this fear comes from one place. You help them transition into showing more fisting – any fisting – and the companies that depend on them get to ease up. That being said, there will always be the pressure of Visa/Mastercard, who often censor all kinds of sexual content, that will be a looming presence for porn film makers and well as web site owners.

I have also discovered a real, honest to god loophole in the distribution of fisting content: VOD syndication!!! These days, some of my films don’t even make it to print, they just go straight to my store and the VOD sites I affiliate with. And two of these VOD companies are getting a huge shout out from me right now for always taking my films exactly as they’re intended to be seen – with every fist in tact.

Femme Facial 6AEBN is a huge global VOD hub with millions of porn titles, and they have been an incredible company to work with. They not only take my films exactly as I want them to be seen, but they also do a great job of getting those films into the right customer’s hands. Fucking Mystic and a few other titles have been promoted so well by them, allowing access to a brand new audience, who may even be seeing queer fisting – and queer porn – for the very first time.

fistingwithquinnPinkLabel.TV is run by the makers of the Crash Pad Series, Pink & White Productions. Unlike AEBN, they specialize in indie, queer, and DIY porn projects. In addition to my new releases, Pink Label also carries the NC-17 Director’s Cut of my narrative short Valencia: Chapter One, which includes a live-shot fisting scene as part of the re-telling of the first chapter of Michelle Tea’s epic memoir, an ode to the lesbian-beloved sex act.

To bring the entire story full circle, AVN announced that this year’s AVN Awards would include selections from major VOD distributors as well as DVD distributors, meaning that my films – and their fisting scenes – are now completely eligible for any AVN category, wether the DVD has fisting on it or not simply because they are live on AEBN and PinkLabel! I’m excited that my films can enter the competition and be judged for exactly what they are, and not a watered down safe-for-the-bookstore safe-for-the-board-meeting fists-out versions. My dream of seeing a fisting scene win an AVN Award are not far off… Now let’s just hope they like what they see!

IMG_0396So there you go – a few successes in my yearly fight to have my films seen in their entirety. I’ve seen some of my Year One Fisting Day goals met, and have found new ways to approach the center of the censorship in coming years. I feel like we are making good process, and I’m feeling optimistic. The adult retail industry may never be fully fist-friendly (there are still quite a few retail stores with some luke warm vibrations around fisting, and there are still plenty of folks who ask me to edit it out on the daily!) but at least we are seeing some opportunities for inclusion.

Fisting Day in all of it’s essence is a metaphor for a larger need. It represents a hope and struggle for queerness, queer sex, female sexual empowerment, consent culture, and sex education to be integrated into society’s images of healthy, happy relationships and desires.

This year, I want to reflect on the new access we’ve been given, and without giving up, take a moment to breath, lube up, and slide our fist into a consensual hole to celebrate some new found fisting freedoms.

courtney-billy-kissingPlease take a look at the new Fisting Porn category over at my online store, and treat yourself to a digital download of your choice for 20% off. If you like, get the DVD too – just remember that from Fuckstyles 2 and beyond, you’re only getting the director’s cut with the download (which is free with any DVD, so you can compare and contrast!)
